Ummm I’ve decided to read the terms and conditions of Facebook and I think I’m frightened. It seems as though what happens on facebook doesn’t stay in Facebook. One clause states that: By posting member content to any part of the website, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to Facebook an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, perform, display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such information and content and to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such information and content, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the forgoing.
Ok I think this is basically telling me that all the information that I post on my profile, such as favourite books, films, interests, groups and even conversations on my wall are all being watched by the fat cats. I was wondering why all those advertisements popping up were particularly interesting to me. Seriously I usually hate advertisements but these were personal. I guess I can look at this in a positive way as I’m being offered tickets to see Red Hot Chilli Peppers at a discount price but no, I protest! This is a violation and I’m being categorised, I’m a piece of data, I feel like I’ve already died and Facebook is like one of those information tags they attach to your toe that people you never wanted to read are reading! I promised I would continue with my Facebook account so I will but only for the interest of this module – I hope. In addition to the idea of the second life I think this is also an interesting topic I shall research further into and discuss with the group.
